The notorious journalist appeals for violence against animals
A complaint against Propaganda Programme broadcast on Darik Radio was filed yesterday by FOUR PAWS with the Council for Electronic Media (CEM) and the Ethics in Electronic Media Committee (EEMC). The Foundation claims that in three broadcasts, the last one aired on 24 February 2008, the anchor Martin Karbovski appealed to the citizens to take the law in their hands against stray dogs and thus violated the Animal Protection Act, the Radio and Television Act, the Criminal Code and the Bulgarian media Code of Conduct.
“We filed a complaint with CEM and EEMC to express our indignation with Mr. Karbovski’s conduct. It is intolerable for a journalist in a national media to take the liberty to openly appeal to the listeners to commit violence and cruelty and to impudently claim that he is not interested in Bulgarian law,” said frm the foundation.
FOUR PAWS feel personally concerned because Karbovski’s appeals and the hatred he instills against stray animals violate the principles of the Foundation and further strain the issue without offering a sensible solution. The recently adopted Animal Protection Act, which is in full line with the European practices and the guidelines of the World Health Organization on stray animals, stipulates castration as the only efficient method for solving the issue.
"It is high time to realize that the physical destruction of stray animals will not solve the issue because new ones will appear in just a few months. Moreover, the Animal Protection Act has defined premeditated murder of an animal as aggravated cruelty for which serious fines are imposed. The use of potent toxic substances, for which Mr. Karboski appeals, constitutes offence pursuant to the Criminal Code. We are going to request the recording of the broadcast and will decide on its grounds whether to file a complaint at the Procurator’s Office as well,” add FOUR PAWS.
FOUR PAWS Foundation has been assisting for years the local government not only in Bulgaria to restrict the population of stray cats and dogs. Successful castration projects have been implemented in Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Macedonia, Greece, Egypt and Sri Lanka. In Bulgaria FOUR PAWS implements projects in Elin Pelin, Dryanovo and Pernik, and castration of stray cats and dogs is starting in Veliko Tarnovo in March.
